Chances are, you have heard whispers about environmental DNA (eDNA). All organisms leave traces of DNA in the environment, which can now be extracted and identified. This means we no longer need to see, hear or catch something to know what is present in our waterways and surrounding environment. A drop of water is all that is needed - imagine the possibilities!
If you are working for a natural resource management organisation, right now is a great time to be considering these possibilities. Across Australia it’s National Landcare Program funding time amongst a range of other initiatives. Organisations are busily pulling together their applications which need to include monitoring and reporting structures. And this is where eDNA species detection can come in - it can help with:
- monitoring threatened, invasive species and biodiversity
- building scientific evidence to demonstrate project outcomes
- community engagement and citizen science
Speed date an eDNA scientist - book your spot for a phone chat!
We have spots available this February for eDNA speed date sessions. In other words, it’s a no obligation way to learn more! This is something we haven’t done before, but we hope it will be useful for the many of you whose ears are pricking up about eDNA. Whether you are working on a funding bid or not, we invite you to book a 30 minute phone chat to catch up with with one of our amazing eDNA scientists.
The only thing we ask in return is that you come armed with questions (there is no such thing as a silly question!) or challenges you are having with species detection/monitoring.
