We are seeking an experienced molecular genetics scientist who will thrive in our growing business.
Our dedicated team are leaders in bringing eDNA science and technology to industry in Australia. Our growing client base and increasing industry interest means we have a host of exciting projects on the go. Along with project delivery we are continuously improving our eDNA services for clients and developing new eDNA techniques.

ROLE MISSION
To ensure the EnviroDNA team builds an enduring leadership position in a rapidly growing industry by overseeing and continuously improving our molecular team’s work so that we:
- develop new/improved eDNA techniques and services that are industry leading and result in more impactful outcomes
- deliver quality eDNA services and projects that meet or exceed client expectations
- build the team’s effectiveness and efficiency in project delivery, and reputation for quality control and assurance.
ROLE OUTCOMES
- Molecular team leadership – ensuring scientifically rigorous outcomes that are delivered safely, on time, and within budget. Example activities: oversight of team workflow & QC/QA, troubleshooting, leading team to improve efficiencies and effectiveness of lab processes, guiding staff and supporting their development.
- Project management & delivery – satisfied clients who want to work with us again and provide referrals. Example activities: leading client projects, communication with clients, undertaking project delivery work e.g. wet lab, data analysis, report writing.
- Innovation & R&D leadership – ensuring we are at the cutting edge of relevant technology and science. Example activities: keeping abreast of eDNA approaches, technology advances and applications, developing R&D priorities/plans with the team, crafting and implementing technical R&D e.g., new assays, new molecular techniques etc.
- Business development – helping to ensure we are financial sustainable. Example activities: assisting with business development and funding opportunities e.g., discussions with clients and collaborators, project designs, applying for grants.
IMPORTANT SKILLS
Excellent foundation and expertise in molecular techniques and analytical skills - for example - DNA extraction, qPCR, primer development, sequencing, NGS/metabarcoding and other molecular methods, and data interpretation /analysis and experience that puts you in a strong position to undertake, improve (e.g. automation, better workflows etc) and lead the eDNA molecular team.
Leadership & interpersonal skills - you will be leading others and liaising with clients and collaborators. Thus, we expect you will not only have good interpersonal skills to manage relationships and expectations but also the motivation and experience to do so.
Good project management, quality control, action orientation with ability to engage people - you are a well organised person who is quick to take action. You have a proven ability to readily bring a team together to successfully plan, manage and deliver outcomes that meet client expectations and high standards for QC/QA.
A knack and drive for R&D, innovation and thinking big picture - you love to pursue new ways of doing things and feel motivated to identify and trial the latest techniques and technologies. You will ideally have experience in thinking big picture and initiating R&D and innovation within an organisation.
Strives for high performance in yourself, others and the business – you strive for improvement and excellence not only in what you deliver, but how you operate. This also extends to your interest in thinking about the broader business including what the team delivers, the impact we are striving to have and how we operate. *Some of the bonus skillsets you might have - highly desirable, but not essential – experience working with eDNA, dry lab (e.g. bioinformatics, coding, database curation), applying environmental science to industry, biodiversity conservation, biosecurity or agricultural industries, experience working in a small or growing business, managing and developing staff, writing scientific papers and reports, business development/funding procurement experience and interest, population genetic analyses using a variety of molecular approaches.
