We are hiring: Molecular Genetic & Field Scientist
We are looking for a molecular genetic scientist that can also feel right at home amongst field situations. Can you see yourself trialling new eDNA techniques for agricultural insect pests or other invasive species at shipping ports? We have several projects driving innovation in the biosecurity and agriculture sphere and we need someone dedicated to making them happen.
- Perhaps you are working in an agricultural or biosecurity sphere and would be excited to throw yourself into cutting edge pest detection.
- Maybe you have been working with eDNA or similar through post graduate studies and are keen to develop your career towards agricultural or biosecurity industries.
- Or maybe you come from a whole other sector but can demonstrate your strong interests and the skills sets relevant for this role.

WHO WE ARE
For nearly 5 years we have been EnviroDNA – Australia’s first dedicated provider of eDNA services. We are a purpose driven business, which spun out of our sister environmental science company Cesar Australia. As the name suggests, environmental DNA (eDNA) is at the heart of what we do. We help government, not-for-profit and private organisations detect species and map biodiversity with eDNA. It’s a technology that is opening the door to unprecedented wildlife detection data. We are in the early stages of the company’s growth busy with market development, product/service development and R&D type activities to bring highly valuable solutions to industry. Ultimately, we aim to enable improved outcomes in important areas such as biosecurity and conservation.
ROLE MISSION
To help drive innovation in agriculture/biosecurity and ensure our clients and collaborators of such projects sing our praises. This will be thanks to you acing project management, project delivery and R&D.
ROLE OUTCOMES
- Project management - Projects meet or exceed milestone deliverables. Example activities: developing project plans and ensuring blocks to progress are identified and addressed.
- Project delivery - Outputs are delivered on time and meet budget
Example activities: molecular work, field work, data analysis, desktop research, report writing, presentation of insights, group discussions, protocol development.
- Stakeholder relationships - Productive ongoing relationships and positive feedback from clients, collaborators, and other stakeholders.
Example activities: Proactive communication with clients/stakeholders, thinking strategically beyond existing projects about how we could help our clients – anticipate their needs.
IMPORTANT SKILLS - DOES THIS SOUND LIKE YOU?
- Relevant expertise in molecular techniques - Competency and experience with molecular lab tasks such as DNA extraction, PCR, qPCR, and sequencing. It will also be very valuable to have experience in, or at the very least a strong interest, with the following areas: eDNA, metabarcoding, agriculture and/or biosecurity, and entomology.
- Comfortable and capable in field work situations
- Good writing and analysis skills
- Demonstrated strong ability for project planning, management & attention to detail
- Confident communicator and collaborator
- R&D initiative and ability to thrive amongst ambiguity
- Other bonus technical expertise, experience and interest that you may have - experience in grant writing, business development, designing robust empirical experiments and a passion for technology, particularly in the molecular area.
