Transport & Ports
We help enable early detection of invasive species to minimise impacts from global transport and port systems.
Promote sustainability and reduce environmental risks by enabling early detection of invasive species. eDNA monitoring serves as a vital early-warning tool, helping to prevent ecological harm and avoid expensive control measures. It also provides an efficient means of assessing biodiversity, offering valuable insights into the potential impacts of operational activities.
- Undertake ballast water monitoring and detect invasive species and harmful organisms
- Environmental impact assessments to evaluate biodiversity before, during and after operations
- Biosecurity and invasive species detection to identify potential threats to ecosystems
- Assess ecosystem health with surrounding marine and freshwater environments
- Perform water quality assessments to identify harmful microorganisms and pathogens in port waters
A collaborative port monitoring program with Agriculture Victoria, the Port of Melbourne, Victorian Ports Corporation, Deakin University and EnviroDNA using eDNA to enhance marine pest monitoring at several Victorian ports. Survey design and sampling methodologies utilised settlement arrays, plankton tows and marine sampling to detect fouling species and larvae.
We analysed samples providing detailed information on high-risk pests. Using both eDNA metabarcoding and targeted qPCR assays, the analysis revealed diverse biological communities, establishing a comprehensive baseline dataset that includes seaweed, microalgae, fungi and marine invertebrates.
These findings are vital for biodiversity protection and will continue to deliver timely data to support strategic management decisions and mitigate the spread of invasive species in the ports.
Our biodiversity assessment solutions allow you to map one or two biodiversity groups or the full spectrum of biodiversity. These solutions transform how our clients make environmental decisions by generating measurable and actionable biodiversity insights. Our clients are able to reduce time, resources and costs needed to survey ecosystems at a local or landscape level.
